Short answer: to start a mobile detailing business in Alberta, pick your market, get a business licence in every city you work in (being mobile doesn't exempt you), buy insurance that covers the vehicles in your care, decide on GST, set prices from your time, and take a deposit on every booking. Then build your first twenty clients from people who already know you before you spend anything on ads.
This guide is the map. Each step links to a full article on that topic.
1. Choose your market
Calgary and Edmonton aren't interchangeable. Calgary's demand is spiky — a chinook can flood your phone one week and cancel half your bookings the next. Edmonton's is steadier, with a long salt season that makes winter the busy period rather than the quiet one. Central Alberta runs on work trucks, dealerships and fleet accounts.

2. Register and get licensed
Register your business name if it isn't your own, and get a business licence from each municipality you work in. The licence follows the business, not a building: working from a van doesn't make you exempt, and a route that crosses city lines may mean more than one licence.
3. Insure the right things
General liability is only the start. It usually excludes damage to property in your care — which means the car you're working on. The coverage that matters most to a detailer is the one that pays when a buffer or chemical damages a customer's vehicle, plus commercial auto for the van.
4. Decide on GST
Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so registered detailers charge 5% GST. You must register once your revenue passes $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters (or in a single quarter), and many detailers register earlier to claim back the GST on equipment and a van. Commercial and fleet customers will expect your GST number on invoices anyway.
5. Set your prices
Price from your time and your drive, not the cheapest listing you can find. Package your services clearly, price winter salt work as its own season, and present ceramic coating in tiers customers can choose between.

6. Protect your calendar with deposits
A detail is a long slot, and a no-show costs you most of a day. Take a deposit when customers book, apply it to the final bill, send reminders, and write a cancellation policy you're comfortable enforcing. Ask for photos of the vehicle at booking so you're not driving out to a job that's twice what you quoted.
7. Plan for Alberta's seasons
Alberta gives detailers two seasons most of Canada doesn't: a long salt season and hail season. Salt removal and interior salt-stain work are real winter products; hail brings calls you can't take, and some you can.

8. Get your first twenty clients
Skip paid ads at the start. Your first clients are people who already trust you, and after that, referrals, before-and-after photos and a booking link that converts better than Instagram DMs.

9. Set up your admin once
Booking, deposits, invoicing with GST, card payments, reminders and a place to send people. You can run that on four or five separate apps, or one.
