Sales tax questions
What is the GST rate in Alberta?
5%. Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so businesses charge only the 5% federal GST.
What's the difference between GST, HST, PST and QST?
GST is the 5% federal sales tax. HST combines GST with a provincial portion into one tax in Ontario and the Atlantic provinces. PST (called RST in Manitoba) is a separate provincial tax in BC, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and QST is Quebec's provincial tax.
How do I calculate sales tax backwards from a total?
Divide the tax-included total by 1 plus the combined rate. In Ontario, $113 ÷ 1.13 = $100 before tax, so the HST is $13. Choose "Remove tax from a total" above to do it for any province.
Is PST charged on top of GST?
No. In BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec, each tax is calculated on the price before tax — never tax on tax. $100 in BC is $5 GST + $7 PST = $112.
Do I have to charge GST as a small business?
You must register once your taxable revenue passes $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters. Below that you're a small supplier and registering is optional.
