Why mobile grooming costs more in Calgary
The mobile groomers above charge more than the salon for every size of dog — for a small dog, 20% to 40% more. Owners are paying for the groom to happen in their driveway: no drop-off, no pickup, no hours in a kennel, and one-on-one attention for a nervous or older dog.
The groomer is paying for it too. A van, water, power and fuel cost money, and every drive between appointments is time that isn't grooming. That's why travel fees exist — two of the mobile groomers above charge $20 to $30 for addresses outside city limits, such as Airdrie, Cochrane or Chestermere.
What changes the price of a groom
- Size. Every Calgary price list starts here. Bigger dogs take longer to bathe and dry.
- Coat type. Long, curly and double coats take longer than smooth coats. One mobile groomer above lists separate prices for large short-haired and long-haired dogs.
- Condition. Matting is priced on the day. Groomers either charge extra time to work mats out or shave the coat short, which is usually kinder to the dog.
- Time since the last groom. A dog groomed every six to eight weeks is faster, and cheaper, than one groomed twice a year.
- Temperament. A dog that needs a slower, gentler groom takes more time, and some groomers add a handling fee.
Add-ons Calgary groomers list
One Calgary mobile groomer publishes a full add-on menu: de-shedding $35, teeth brushing $15, a teddy bear cut $25 to $45, nail grinding $30, de-skunking $40, and an extra 30 minutes for $50. Add-ons are where a groom's price often moves — ask for the full menu before you book.
Cancellation fees
Expect one. Good Sniff Spaw, for example, charges $45 for cancellations inside 12 hours. For a mobile groomer, a late cancellation means a 90-minute slot plus a drive that can't be resold. If you're a groomer writing your own policy, see our cancellation and no-show policy template.
If you're a groomer setting your prices
Price from your time, not your competitors' lists. Work out what an hour of grooming needs to earn after your van, products, insurance and GST, then price each service by how long it really takes. List coat types as separate services — a doodle full groom and a smooth-coat full groom shouldn't share a price or a time slot.
Then publish your prices. Owners compare before they book, and a price list with sizes, coat types and add-ons answers the question before they message you.
